Get Thee Behind Me, Satan!
February 21, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Our Lenten walk through Mark continues with Mark 8:31-38, when Jesus warns his followers that he will die and rise again, and his words scare his followers. In fact they scare his followers so much that Peter takes him aside and rebukes him, prompting Jesus to say, “Get behind me, Satan!” Ouch, that seems kinda harsh. Why would Jesus react so strongly to Peter voicing the concerns of his followers, who knew full well that the religious leaders of the nation would hear Jesus’ words and use them against him?
Jesus goes on to tell the disciples that following him was the path of sacrifice. It was then; for them it was life and limb. It is now, though, thankfully for us in this country it’s not usually a physical danger with which we are confronted. But we are called to make sacrifices nonetheless.
Let’s get together at the South Street Cafe on Wednesday, February 21, at 5:30, to talk about what Jesus’ tough words, to deny ourselves and take up our crosses, mean for us, and why he was so angry with Peter for voicing his concerns. There’s something more going on there.
